Private Eye's Paul Foot Award 2019 has gone to Emily Dugan, whose work for BuzzFeed on the cuts and downgrades to England's legal aid system - which has left defendants (including those falsely accused of sexual crime) withour lawyers, revealed the deeply alarming state of affairs in the English justice system. It earned the admiration of the judges and the hostility of government spin doctors, who derided Dugan as "crazy". Chair of judges Padraig Reidy said Dugan's brilliant reporting on our broken legal system exposed a litany of failure and a government apparatus designed to cover up problems rather than address them.
